Dear Hon [First name Last name] MP,
I am a concerned constituent of your electorate, writing to urge you to vote against the English Language Bill at its upcoming second reading.
This Bill will be actively harmful to our country's social cohesion and inclusion and could very likely instigate more instances of racism. This is because the Bill is a signal from the government that the English language is more core to our nation's identity than any other immigrant language spoken by our incredibly diverse communities. It reinforces the idea that belonging in Aotearoa is tied to speaking English, and that English should be privileged over other languages that come from overseas. That is an unnecessary and dangerous signal to be sending when we have had so many recent instances of racist attacks, xenophobia, and exclusion of Kiwis of varying ethnicities.
Instead, we need to aim for unity. Rather than officially elevating a single immigrant language above others, the government should instead be promoting the idea that we can all be seen to belong in this country, no matter what language we speak or cultural practices we follow. I know that this is a future that you support, and so I urge you to prioritise voting against the Bill at its second reading.
Here is some social research showing that symbolic signals from the government can in fact lead to changing social norms and more prejudice in society. What the government legislates matters for how people on the ground act. Please do not empower people who want to exclude others from belonging based on ethnicity, culture, or language.
I am concerned that this Bill would undermine the status of te reo Māori, by signalling a step toward privileging English as an indigenous language of the country. When Hon Winston Peters introduced the Bill, he lamented the increased use of te reo Māori and said that while the "Bill won't solve the push of this virtue signalling narrative completely [...] it is the first step towards ensuring common sense prevails when the vast majority of New Zealanders communicate in English […] in a country that should use English as its primary and official language.” It is clear to me, as a concerned voter, that the Bill is explicitly designed to undermine te reo Māori.
For these reasons, I strongly urge you attend the Bill's second reading in order to vote against it.
Kind regards,
If you are unsure of your electorate, find it here.
